“I want to introduce people to Jesus, because he’s the answer to all our problems.”
Hi I’m Kristofer and I’ve been following Jesus since I was 14. My main goal has been getting to know this one person – Jesus of Nazareth, who I believe is the Messiah (or Christ).
My parents took us (my sister and I) to church since I was 5. Through the love of my family and church family, I experienced the love of Jesus Christ. That loving, supportive community convinced me that:
- God loves everyone, which means He cares about you and me no matter what.
- Jesus is the best at showing God’s love, because he is God’s son and God the Son.
From these caring people, I learned that the best way to know God is to read the Bible. And the best person in the Bible to start with is Jesus, in the gospels (the Jesus books in the Bible). Watching and hearing Jesus interact with people is hearing and watching God.
And our church didn’t add anything to that. No extra statements of faith or creeds. No particular teacher to trust more than others. Just Jesus, just the Bible. We had only one name for ourselves – Christians, because we follow Jesus Christ.
So I read the gospels two or three times. I observed how they’re similar, and how they’re different. At university I took biblical Greek so I could hear the words of Jesus without interpretation. More recently I’ve been diving into biblical society, the culture of the Israelites, to understand the full impact of Jesus’ teachings.
And I am not great at any of these things. I’m still a Gentile, outsider to the Jews. I can’t read the original gospels in Greek without helps – a *lot* of helps. And I don’t remember every detail about the gospels.
And that’s ok. I don’t remember everything I’ve learned. But I do know Jesus better. And the better I know Jesus, the better I follow him, the better I love like Jesus.
And the better I can introduce people to the real Jesus.
My goal with 50 Days With Jesus is simply to introduce people to this Jesus – the Jesus of the gospels, of the Bible – who cares about everyone. Who cares about you. Whose time on earth carried out God’s love for us.
