What if God threw a party and no one showed up? And what does it really cost to follow Jesus?
—
Someone said “Salvation is a free gift, but it will cost you everything.”
Jesus describes someone hosting a banquet. It’s free to the guests, they just have to show up. And that’s exactly what they don’t do. Instead they have excuses why they can’t attend a free celebration hosted by a generous person!
Jesus told this story to people who were sure they were invited to God’s banquet. Yes, they were invited, but were they showing up, or making excuses?
After saying God’s banquet is free, Jesus says that following him costs everything. We have to be willing to follow even if the people closest to us don’t agree. We have to put aside our own wants for what Jesus wants.
Like the people invited to the banquet, we have to decide which is more important—what we’re doing, or what Christ wants to do in us and through us?
Does this get you thinking about giving yourself more generously to God?
